Mouton, Jean
(before 1460, Haut-Wignes near Samer, Pas-de-Calais, France – 30 October 1522, St. Quentin)
   Roman Catholic priest and composer of 18 masses, 116 motets, and eight Magnifi-cats, and teacher of Adrian Willaert, the earliest record (1477) is as a singing teacher in Nesle (Somme). He entered the service of Queen Anne of Brittany sometime after 1502 and served the royal court for the rest of his life. Mouton’s masses and motets exhibit most of the contrapuntal techniques current at the turn of the 16th century: cantus firmus, canon, paraphrase and parody.
